When Martin Reading committed to renting a space at the Victory Community Centre a year ago to cook hot meals for the community, he had no idea if anyone would turn up. Twelve months on and he’s expanded to Tahuna – with plans to take on the whole region. Martin’s Food for Families started as an idea to get left over produce from market gardeners and
use it to cook healthy, hot food. He started in Victory and now has around 50 people turning up every Friday night to feed themselves and their families for free. A month ago he started in Tahuna and already has more than 20 people turning up each Tuesday night. He says support from the community and businesses has seen his vision grow much quicker than he ever thought possible. And just last week he was contacted by Abon Wastney of the

Seventh Day Adventist Church, who had a caravan fully converted into a kitchen that the church’s charity group, Adra Care, use to help in emergencies, like the Christchurch earthquake. Martin says with the caravan he can take his Food for Families all over the top of the south. “I have a vision which I call the community kitchen, which I hope will be run by volunteers, with businesses paying our rent and with all the produce donated. So we’ll be able to cook in the one place and then we can go to the different community centres in the caravan. We’ll be able to go to Stoke, Tahuna, Motueka, Richmond.” The ambitious plan is com-
ing together with the YMCA offering their commercial kitchen to Martin, rent free, for another year. “The support from people has been amazing and it’s great that we can provide this kind of service to people in need, with the help from other Nelsonians.’ Martin says the people come down for various reasons. Some are there every week, while many others are there for a few weeks before their situation improves and they move on. He says there are no free-loaders but plenty of good people, and along with his wife and daughter and the other volunteers, he’s happy to be able to help. “There’s is definitely a need and it feels good to help.”

Trafalgar Centre and School of Music closed until 2016 Two of Nelson’s major events centres will remain closed until 2016, announced Nelson City Council on Monday. Opus has been appointed to oversee the earthquake strengthening of the Trafalgar Centre and the Nelson School of Music auditorium, with construction not due to be finished until 2016. The Trafalgar Centre was closed in December last year after it was deemed a risk to human life in the event of an earthquake. The Nelson School of Music followed a few weeks later for similar reasons and the announcement yesterday, that

Sign stolen from petanque club
548 4949 The sign before it was stolen a couple of weeks ago.
Just weeks after installing a new sign, the Nelson Petanque Club has had it stolen. The sign was put on the Nelson Highland Band clubrooms, which is next to the petanque club at Rutherford Park, to encourage people to come and play petanque. Club president Maria Clinton says they club paid $500
for the sign so walkers on the new Maitai walkway would see it. The theft has been reported to the police. She says it was bolted high on the wall and she was shocked when it went missing. “Someone must know where it is. Our members are so disappointed. Unfortunately, it’s been a case of now you see it, now you don’t.”

The funeral for Nelson teenager Wynter Emerson will be held at the Nayland College Hall this Saturday, after an overwhelming response to an appeal is helping to bring Wynter home to Nelson. Wynter’s body was found in Lake Union in Seattle on September 8, after the 18-year-old former Nayland College student was reported missing since attending a music festival in Seattle that ended on September 1. Wynter had been travelling in Canada and the United States for about two months and was expected to return to New Zealand in December. A PayPal fund was set up to help the family bring their son home, and this week Wynter’s parents, Shon and Ally, and his brothers, Tyler and Seth, issued a statement saying “we have been completely overwhelmed with the support from the local community, our friends,

We want to sincerely thank those who have taken the time to donate, visit, and send messages of support, flowers and food. School bus caught speeding Locally Owned and Operated
A speeding school bus carrying primary school-aged children was caught in a police sting, aimed at keeping the roads around schools safe. Police discovered the speeding school bus during the first day of a road policing operation targeting speed around schools, but won’t say which school the children on board attended. Acting Senior Sergeant Mike Wardle says it was disappointing to start the operation by detecting a speeding school bus. “These drivers are entrusted with the safety of other people’s children and I would expect they would be more aware than other road users of the risks they face.” The operation, which will run for the next two months, also focuses on young drivers and risk factors such as cell phone use and breaches of graduated driver licences. Police stopped 121 vehicles over
a 12 hour period, with a focus on areas around schools at the beginning and end of the day. Infringement notices were issued to 101 drivers. Thirty-two tickets were issued for speeding and a further 18 tickets were issued for exceeding 20kmh past a school bus which had stopped to pick up or drop off children. Thirteen drivers were found to be breaching the conditions of their graduated driver licence and three were found using mobile phones. Mike says the operation would continue to target high risk areas over the coming weeks. “It’s timely to remind drivers that traffic travelling in either direction on the road is required to slow down to 20kmh for a stopped school bus. Many people seem to be unaware of their responsibility when they are on the opposite side of the road,” he says.

Nelson in Gigatown final For a frantic final few hours, Nelson held off a strong challenge from Poriua to hold fifth spot and gain entry to the final of the Gigatown competition, which starts tomorrow. The top five aren’t confirmed until Wednesday by Chorus, the company behind the competition, but Nelson looks set to compete in the final. The first round of the competition ended last Thursday, with Nelson fifth behind Wanaka, Dunedin, Timaru and Gisborne. Now the top five will battle it out until November 25 to see who will win the competition.

Tahuna teacher to say goodbye after 30 years

After 30 years of teaching at the one school it was inevitable that Carol Climo would start to run into parents who were also former students, but she’s decided to call it a day before she runs into the next generation. Carol started at Tahunanui School in 1979 and has been there ever since – apart from a two year stint in Auckland and another four years in Maruia. She often has parents of current students come up to her saying she taught them as well. “At the last gala, one of the boys who I taught when I first started at Tahunanui came up to talk to me and he’s now 47. There’s been heaps of children of parents who I’ve also taught. I’ve been waiting for the third generation, but I’m outta here before that happens,” she joked. Carol says she’s stayed at Tahunanui for so long because of the friendly community, teaching staff and kids. She’s taught new entrants since 1990, so has often been the first person to give hundreds of kids their first official lessons in reading and writing. She says that’s been made easier by the families. “I love that fact that mums come along and we develop a relationship. They develop trust to leave their babies with me and I think that’s so important.

They’ve had a wonderful start to school.” She says calling a day on her long career will be tough, but she will be joining her husband Kevin in retirement and says she’ll be treating it “like my next job”. “I think I’ll miss it hugely. It will be a new challenge but it will be exciting. We’re a hunting and gathering type of family so we’ll be caravanning, fishing, we’ve got a boat, we’ll do some shooting.” Tahunanui principal Paul Drummond says Carol will be a big loss. “Lifelong attitude to learning is hugely influenced by a child’s first start to schooling. I know that every child and their family at Tahunanui gets that positive beginning with Carol. “She creates that positive first impression that lasts. She is a wonderful teacher who has also inspired the practice of her colleagues. She shaped and affected the future of so many people, both young and old.”

Grant helps peninsula fight pests Bishop Peninsula is set for a $40,000 boost to its fight against pests. Environment minister Nick Smith says the peninsula, also called Uri O Te Wai, in the Wakapuaka Estuary is a “stunning” remnant of native forest and the money will be used to partner with its owners, local iwi, to help protect native birdlife. “It’s native birdlife takes a hammering from pests like rats, mice, stoats and possums. This grant will enable a network of traps to be laid to knock back pest numbers and enable the birdlife to recover and flourish. The benefits will not just be on the peninsula, but will provide increased native birdlife to the wider

Church sells pews, Tuesday, September 2: The Stoke Methodist Church were thrilled with how their garage sale went, selling all of their 20 pews and, with such high demand for them, they could have sold 20 more. There were also plenty of chairs and other furniture items that were sold, making way for upgrades to the church that will better benefit the community. The money raised by the sale of the pews and furniture items will be going towards new chairs and furnishings for their new building. Political party wants 1080 ban A Nelson-based political party is hoping to reignite the debate around 1080 poison and one of its candidates, Nelson jeweller Glen James, says the government should ban it. The Ban 1080 party doesn't mince words when describing its main political issue and Glen, who is seventh on the party list and standing in the Kaikouria electorate, says the government should be smarter when trying to deal with pests. "The world has a natural way of finding a balance. Sure there will be rats and stoats that eat birds eggs, but that's balance."
1080 poison is used by the Department of Conservation to control pests like rats, stoats and possums. The bright pellets are dropped from a plane over an area where the pests are, which are then eaten. But Glen says it's not just the pests that are dying as a result of the poison. "There's a lot of by-kill. It kills a huge percentage of birds. It's killing a lot of kea and other animals as well like dogs and deer." The party has dozens of hoardings around Nelson and Glen is hoping to use the election to highlight the issue. "We should be using people, not poisons, because they
are species specific. At the moment it's just drop 1080 on the bush and hope." But environment minister Nick Smith says it would be a disaster if 1080 drops stopped. "I accept that the 1080 issue is a complex one and that there are lots of people who are poorly informed. "Our rats, stoats and possums kill 25 million native birds a year. Our grandchildren will not see kiwi in the wild unless we use the best tools available to knock back those pest numbers. The issue is particularly acute this year because we had a beech mast event. That is where our native for-
ests drop their seed, it happens every seven years and it creates about 50 million tonne of seed and an explosion of firstly, mice, then rats, then stoats. Then when the seeds germinate in spring the massive – and we're talking about plague proportions of rats – have no food. The population of rats collapse and that causes starvation for the stoats and our native birds become the target and they just get obliterated." He says there's no way the pests can be trapped. "If you think you can control pests in our massive forests by trapping, you're dreaming."

New liquor store opens
A new liquor store on Gloucester St has got off to a roaring start, says its owner. Ranbir Singh and his wife Sukhraj moved to Nelson from Palmerston North to open The Bottle Store. When they applied for consent from Nelson City Council there was significant push back from residents, saying there were already enough liquor outlets in the region. But Ranbir says he’s here to be a good community citizen and he’s had a great start in the city. “We really love Nelson. We were here for not even two days and it felt like home. “And the people have been really great, too. We had a really good response from our ad in the Nelson Weekly last week and every day we’re getting more and more customers.” Ranbir says the layout of the store and his wide range and craft beer on tap are his big assets. “We also have a big push on our customers drinking responsibly.”

As far as first weeks at a new job go, Jenelle Strickland isn't complaining. The former Tasman Makos' team manager had just been appointed as the manager for the New Zealand women's sevens rugby team when she was put on a plane to Glasgow, to get a feel of life at the Commonwealth Games. "Best first week ever,” she says. “I had a bruised arm by the time I left Glasgow, from me pinching myself at how lucky I am." After five years as the first woman to manage a professional rugby team in New Zealand, Jenelle quit her job at the end of last season's successful run and took a job at Tasman Rugby Union headquarters. Soon after that she was shoulder-tapped to apply for the sevens job and, after going through the interview process, was appointed this winter. Janelle will still be based in Nelson and will fly to training camps in Tauranga, and to tournaments around the world when necessary. She is expecting to be away from home for around four months of the year. As well as travelling to places like Dubai, Holland, the United States and China on the women’s sevens world circuit, the big carrot is the Olympic Games in Brazil in 2016. She says having the opportunity to work in that environment will be "amazing". “For me, this is a dream job in terms of getting to manage a national team and taking that

Everyone who loves sports will know it’s a huge opportunity just to go to the Olympics and watch it, let alone be a part of a team that’s competing in it.” The women’s sevens team is new, created after the sport was granted Olympic status, but expectation on it to win gold at the Olympics will still be massive. “They’ve won the world series twice so they will be one of the favourites and women’s sevens is the first team sport to finish at the Olympics, so they could potentially be the first team to win a gold medal at the games,” says Jenelle. As team manager, it’s Jenelle’s job to organise flights, accommodation, make sure the players are getting the right
physiotherapy treatment, help develop team culture, set team protocols and she will also be the team’s main media contact. She says being able to manage a national team, while based in Nelson, is the best of both worlds. “I’m stoked about being able to be based in Nelson. I love it here and didn’t really want to have to move to pursue my career, but I thought I may have had to. So the fact I don’t is awesome, because I can be around my friends and family and my support network when I am home.” Jenelle’s first tournament in charge is a pre-season tournament in Noosa at the start of October, before the World Series tournament starts in Dubai at the beginning of December.

Spring is in the air, days are getting longer and the weather has been pretty settled. The winter fish are on the 'chew' in the deeper waters of the region, as spring starts and their pre spawning conditioning season starts to kick in. Get your boat in for a service early, so as to avoid the mad rush when Nelson hears of early season 3-8 lb snapper getting caught close in around the bay. Give it another few weeks and the set-netters and long-liners will start scoring the odd big Moocher who will be closer in the bay chasing those elusive whitebait and smelts, although probably along with plenty of greyboy school sharks as well. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club is pleased to annouce that, first social day coming up on Saturday, October 11, at 5pm our guest speaker will be a representative from Ministry for Primary Industries (old MAF). All new members, and any other fishers who maybe considering joining our club, are more than welcome to come along to the Tasman Bay Cruising club venue on the marina side just south of the Nelson launching ramp (the children are more than welcome along also). The Premier 1 netball final lived up to all expectations, when a tightly-contested game was played between top seed Richmond and defending champions Jacks OPD. In the four clashes this season the spoils had been shared with two wins apiece, however the slate was wiped clean and the winner took the title. Jacks were without their ace goal shooter Ani Waitai, due to a coaching commitment with the Tasman Men at their New Zealand Championships. But Hannah Mead handled the GS bib with aplomb to defeat Stoke NBS 52-51 in the semi, just two days earlier. It was mooted in netball circles that the competition had been such this year that any one of the top four could take the title. And going into the final there were a whole lot of “netball experts” sitting on the fence when it came down to predicting a winner. Jacks began well by converting a turnover to open the score and then scored on their centre pass to be 2-0 up, however Richmond did exactly the same to even the ledger. Richmond soon found their rhythm and scored eight out of nine goals to take a commanding lead, while Jacks looked to be trou-
